Expanded Carrier Screening in Belgium - Eva van Steijvoort, PhD Candidate, KU Leuven
Through carrier screening couples at-risk of conceiving a child with an autosomal recessive or X-linked condition can be identified prior to conception, allowing prospective parents to make informed reproductive decisions when planning for a family. Following recommendations made by the Superior Health Council (SHC) of Belgium, a Belgian Genetic Carrier Screening test (BeGECS) was launched in October 2019. Eva Van Steijvoort (PhD Candidate, KU Leuven, Belgium) will start her presentation with a brief presentation of the BeGECS offer. Next, she will present the results of an online survey exploring knowledge, attitudes and preferences regarding expanded carrier screening (ECS) among non-pregnant reproductive-aged women in Flanders (Belgium).
After Eva’s presentation we will have a first reaction from Lidewij Henneman, PhD, Senior researcher and co-Director of the Amsterdam Reproduction & Development research institute of Amsterdam UMC.
